Why This Airdrop Matters
The eligibility checker went live on 19 June 2024 and claims opened the next day. Founder Bryan Pellegrino said about 1.28 million wallets qualified out of more than six million unique addresses that had used the protocol, so roughly one address in five received a share. The team screened for fake accounts through self-reporting, bounty hunting and work with on-chain security firms.
The unusual feature was "Proof-of-Donation". Before claiming, recipients had to donate $0.10 per token in USDC, USDT or ETH, with the proceeds going to the Protocol Guild, which funds Ethereum core developers. LayerZero estimated up to $18.5 million in donations and said it would match up to $10 million. Critics said a forced donation sat badly with the idea of an airdrop, which is meant to reward use, while others praised the money raised for Ethereum.
At the time of reporting, about 57.5% of ZRO had been claimed. For the token generation event, The Block reported that 25% of supply unlocked on day one: 8.5% immediately, 11% reserved for future snapshots and requests for proposals, 5% for the LayerZero Foundation and 0.5% for community members.
The donation rule is worth thinking about as a pattern. It turned an airdrop into a purchase of a sort: to receive tokens you had to pay, and the price effectively set a cost for claiming. That filters out low-value claims, since a small allocation might not justify the donation, and it raises money, but it also excludes people who did not understand the rule or could not pay.

The ZRO claim has closed. If you claimed, check the official site for vesting and any later snapshot rounds. Be careful with anything that asks for a "donation" or fee to unlock ZRO, since the genuine one went to the Protocol Guild through the official claim flow. Reports on Sybil screening mean that if you were excluded, appeals went through the official process and not through third parties.
