About The Project

Optimism is an Ethereum Layer 2 that executes transactions off the main chain and posts the results back to Ethereum. Its token, OP, is used for governance by the Optimism Collective, which also funds builders through grants and Retro Funding rounds. In its early years the project airdropped OP to users in several rounds, which is why people still look for the next one.

A previous version of this page listed Blast as the network and said Optimism "conducts recurring airdrops". Neither is accurate today. Optimism runs on its own OP Mainnet, and the recurring airdrops have stopped.

Why This Airdrop Matters

Airdrops have been paused

The Optimism Foundation's Year 4 budget update, covered by CryptoBriefing, states that no user airdrops were run. New OP entering circulation from the Governance Fund fell 53% to 13.4 million tokens, and new Retro Funding fell 30% to 14.2 million. The Foundation expects both airdrops and Retro Funding to stay paused through Year 5.

The reserve was redirected

On 19 August 2026 the community approved moving 546.9 million OP, worth about $49.7 million at the time, out of the airdrop reserve and into a new ecosystem development fund, as Forklog reported.

The vote was tight. Support sat at 45.77% until the Test in Prod team cast 8.486 million OP of votes 17 minutes before voting closed, lifting the total to 61.84%. Delegate cp0x objected that the tokens were meant for future user airdrops, and L2BEAT supported reallocating them while opposing the final wording because it said too little about how results would be measured.

What to expect

The reserve that paid for earlier airdrops is now earmarked for something else, so a broad new user airdrop looks unlikely for now. Governance can always change course, and the official allocation documentation is the place to see how OP is currently assigned.

Participation Guide

There is nothing to claim. If you want to be involved with Optimism for its own sake, the routes the project describes are using applications on OP Mainnet, delegating your OP voting power to an active delegate, and contributing in ways that could qualify for grants or Retro Funding. Do not connect a wallet to any site offering to "claim OP", and read governance proposals on the official forum instead of relying on social media summaries.

Its own OP Mainnet, an Ethereum Layer 2. An earlier version of this page wrongly listed Blast.
